What happens if your agency misses the 29 July AUSTRAC enrolment deadline?

Five days. That's what's left before AUSTRAC's 29 July 2026 enrolment deadline for real estate agencies.

What the deadline actually says

AUSTRAC's own guidance is direct:

"Businesses must apply to enrol by 29 July 2026 if they provide any of the new designated services that commence on 1 July 2026." (AUSTRAC)

Two things worth being precise about, because it's easy to blur them:

Enrolling is not the same as registering. Under the AML/CTF Act 2006, real estate agencies enrol as reporting entities with AUSTRAC. "Register" isn't the correct term for this step.
29 July is not the same date as 1 July. Your AML/CTF program, CDD procedures, and staff training obligations commenced 1 July 2026. Enrolment is a separate administrative deadline that falls a month later. It is not extra breathing room, if you haven't started your program yet, you're already behind on that part regardless of the enrolment date.

What happens if you don't enrol by 29 July

AUSTRAC has been clear about its posture: "the expectation is compliance, and the alternative is enforcement."

Operating as a reporting entity without enrolling is a breach of the AML/CTF Act 2006. AUSTRAC can issue infringement notices or escalate to civil penalty proceedings for agencies that haven't enrolled. We won't guess at a dollar figure here, AUSTRAC hasn't published one specific to missed enrolment, and inventing a number wouldn't help you. What matters is the mechanism: enforcement is on the table, and AUSTRAC has said plainly it isn't extending the deadline.

The other 29 July obligation people miss
