How to find your AUSTRAC registration number as a real estate agent

Quick answer

After you enrol with AUSTRAC via AUSTRAC Connect, your registration number (also called your reporting entity identifier) is available in your AUSTRAC Connect account under your entity profile. If your enrolment was returned, the most common causes are ABN-entity type mismatches, incomplete compliance officer details, and wrong designated service selections. AML Simple's Enrolment Cheat Sheet pre-fills every field to avoid these issues.

The fastest way to avoid enrolment issues: use the AUSTRAC Enrolment Cheat Sheet inside AML Simple. It pre-fills every field AUSTRAC needs from your agency profile, so you are not guessing at field formats or missing information. Takes around 5 minutes.

Need the detail? Here it is.

General information only. This article describes the AUSTRAC enrolment process based on publicly available AUSTRAC guidance. It is not legal or compliance advice. For specific guidance on your enrolment, contact AUSTRAC directly or consult a qualified AML/CTF compliance professional. Information current as of June 2026 - confirm with AUSTRAC for binding guidance.

What the AUSTRAC registration number is

When you enrol with AUSTRAC as a reporting entity, AUSTRAC assigns your business a unique identifier - your reporting entity identifier, commonly referred to as your AUSTRAC registration number.

This number is your formal identifier in the AUSTRAC system. You will use it when:

  • Submitting reports to AUSTRAC (suspicious matter reports, threshold transaction reports, annual compliance reports)
  • Corresponding with AUSTRAC about your compliance obligations
  • Referencing your enrolment status in internal compliance documentation

It is not a certificate of compliance. It does not mean AUSTRAC has reviewed or approved your AML/CTF program. It means you are registered as a reporting entity in their system.

Where to find your registration number

Your AUSTRAC registration number is visible inside your AUSTRAC Connect account after enrolment is processed.

Step by step:

  1. Go to connect.austrac.gov.au
  2. Log in with the credentials you used to register
  3. Navigate to your entity profile or account settings
  4. Your reporting entity identifier appears there

If you enrolled and are not sure whether the process was completed, log in and check your account status. A successfully enrolled entity will show as active, and the identifier will be visible.

If you enrolled but have not received any confirmation and cannot find the identifier in your account, the most likely explanation is that your enrolment is still being processed, or that it was returned due to an issue with the form.

Common reasons AUSTRAC enrolment is rejected or returned

AUSTRAC enrolment forms are returned for a specific set of reasons. If you received a notice that your enrolment was not accepted, here are the most common causes:

1. ABN does not match the entity type

AUSTRAC's system cross-references your ABN with the Australian Business Register. If the entity type you selected in AUSTRAC Connect does not match what is registered with the ABR (for example, you enrolled as a company but your ABN is registered as a sole trader), the form will be returned.

Fix: Check your ABN registration at abn.business.gov.au. The entity type in AUSTRAC Connect must match exactly.

2. The nominated compliance officer details are incomplete

AUSTRAC requires at least one nominated AML/CTF compliance officer with complete details - full legal name, contact details, and role within the agency. Partial information or placeholder text causes the form to be returned.

Fix: Make sure the compliance officer details are complete and accurate. The compliance officer is the person responsible for your AML/CTF program - typically the principal, licensee in charge, or a designated senior staff member.

3. The designated services selection is wrong

AUSTRAC Connect asks you to select which designated services your agency provides. If you select services that do not apply to your business, or leave out services that do, the form may be queried.

Fix: For a standard residential sales agency, select the service category for "real estate services" or the equivalent Tranche 2 designation. If you are unsure which to select, use the AML Simple onboarding wizard - it maps your actual services to the correct regulatory definitions.

4. The principal officer information does not match ASIC records

For companies and trusts, AUSTRAC cross-checks principal officer information against ASIC records. If the name or details you enter do not match the current ASIC filing, the form is returned.

Fix: Check your current ASIC records and make sure the information in AUSTRAC Connect reflects what is registered. If your ASIC details are out of date, update them first.

5. The form was submitted with missing required fields

Some fields in AUSTRAC Connect are mandatory but not clearly marked. If a required field was skipped, the form is returned incomplete.

Fix: The AML Simple Enrolment Cheat Sheet identifies every mandatory field and tells you exactly what to enter in each one. It is the fastest way to make sure nothing is missed.

What to do if your enrolment is taking a long time

AUSTRAC aims to process enrolment forms within a set timeframe, but during the period leading up to 1 July 2026, processing times may be longer due to the volume of new reporting entities enrolling.

If you submitted your enrolment and have not received confirmation:

  1. Log in to AUSTRAC Connect and check your application status. If it shows "submitted" or "under review," it is being processed.
  2. Check your email (including spam) for any correspondence from AUSTRAC requesting more information or notifying you of an issue.
  3. Contact AUSTRAC directly if you need confirmation of your status. AUSTRAC's contact details are at austrac.gov.au/contact.

Do not assume that because you submitted the form, you are enrolled. Confirm the status before 1 July.

Enrolment vs compliance: what your registration number does not mean

Being enrolled with AUSTRAC means you are in the system as a reporting entity. It does not mean:

  • Your AML/CTF program has been reviewed or approved by AUSTRAC
  • Your CDD processes have been assessed
  • You are compliant with the Act

Enrolment is one step in meeting your obligations, not the whole obligation. After you enrol, you still need:

  • A written AML/CTF program approved by senior management
  • CDD processes set up and operational
  • Sanctions and PEP screening in place
  • Record-keeping running from the first designated service
  • Staff trained

The role of AML Simple in the enrolment process

AML Simple does not submit your AUSTRAC enrolment on your behalf - you submit it through AUSTRAC Connect directly. What AML Simple does is make the process significantly faster and less error-prone.

The AUSTRAC Enrolment Cheat Sheet (at /enrolment-cheatsheet inside the app) is a reference document that pre-fills every field AUSTRAC needs from your agency profile. When you set up your agency in AML Simple - entering your ABN, services, and key personnel details - those details populate the Cheat Sheet. You open AUSTRAC Connect in one tab, the Cheat Sheet in another, and copy-paste down the form.

This approach eliminates the most common reasons for enrolment rejections: mismatched entity types, incomplete compliance officer details, and missing required fields.

Frequently asked questions

I enrolled months ago. Can I still access my AUSTRAC registration number?

Yes. Your registration number remains in your AUSTRAC Connect account indefinitely. Log in and navigate to your entity profile to find it.

Do I need my AUSTRAC registration number to build my AML/CTF program?

No. You can build your program before enrolment is complete - you do not need the registration number to use the AML Simple Program Generator or to draft your compliance documentation. The registration number is needed for formal reporting to AUSTRAC, not for program development.

My enrolment was rejected. How long do I have to resubmit before 1 July?

There is no specific resubmission deadline separate from the general 1 July obligation. If your enrolment was returned, fix the identified issues and resubmit as soon as possible. Given that processing takes time and 1 July is approaching, do not delay.

Can multiple people in my agency have access to the AUSTRAC Connect account?

Yes. AUSTRAC Connect supports multiple users within an entity's account. If you want your compliance officer and your principal to both have access, that can be set up within AUSTRAC Connect.

Is the AUSTRAC registration number the same as our ABN?

No. They are different identifiers. Your ABN is issued by the ATO and identifies your business for tax and other purposes. Your AUSTRAC registration number (reporting entity identifier) is issued by AUSTRAC and is specific to your reporting entity status under the AML/CTF Act 2006. You need both, but they are separate numbers.

What if our agency name changed since we enrolled?

If your agency's legal name has changed since you enrolled, you should update your details in AUSTRAC Connect. Keeping your registration details current is part of your ongoing compliance obligations. Contact AUSTRAC for guidance on the process for updating entity details.

Do I need to display or publish my AUSTRAC registration number anywhere?

There is no requirement to display your AUSTRAC registration number on your website, property listings, or marketing materials. It is an internal identifier used for your reporting and correspondence with AUSTRAC.

Getting compliant before 1 July

If you are reading this in the final weeks before 1 July 2026 and still need to get your enrolment and program in place, here is the fastest path:

  1. Sign up at AML Simple - enter your ABN and set up your agency profile (around 2 minutes)
  2. Open the Enrolment Cheat Sheet and submit your AUSTRAC enrolment (around 5 minutes)
  3. Run the AML/CTF Program Generator to produce your written program (around 15 minutes)
  4. Get sign-off from senior management on the program

That sequence gets you from zero to enrolled-and-documented in under an hour. The record-keeping, CDD, and screening workflows are ready to use as soon as your program is in place.
